iPhone 3G vs. 3GS Parts - Cross Compatibility

When we first started doing repairs at iHoleSale, we found there was a huge interest in what we were doing. Many people wanted to buy the parts and do the repair themselves. This led us to our E-Commerce Wholesale Parts business.  We found more people wanted parts than wanted repairs.  With the economy the way it is, it has become the norm to repair your device rather than buy a new one and toss the broken one aside.  To save even more money, people are repairing the devices themselves rather than using a local or online repair shop.

We have come across so many questions by do it yourself repair customers:

Is this part compatible with the 3G and the 3GS?

Today we are going to discuss a couple of parts that are sometimes thought to be compatible by customers, but in fact aren't.  We are going to compare the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.

The touch screen digitizer for the iPhone 3G and 3GS look almost the same at first glance.  Taking a closer look, the flex connector is different from the 3G to the 3GS, they are not compatible and they will not fit into the connector.

The charge port assembly for the 3G and 3GS are not Compatible, the 3GS has an additional flex cable that was not on the 3G charge port assembly.

The Batteries for the 3G and 3SG look identical, but they are not compatible.

Parts that ARE cross compatible between the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G:

  • Headphone Jack and Flex Cable
  • Proximity Sensor
  • The Charge Port itself (not the assembly-it has an additional flex connector)
  • Power, Mute, and Volume Buttons
  • Vibrator
  • Home Button
  • Wifi Flex Cable
  • Adhesive for the Digitizer Installation
  • Digitizer Frame/Bezel
  • Ear Speaker
  • LCD Metal Back Plate
  • Screw Set
  • Sim Card Tray
Parts that are NOT cross compatible between the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS:
  • Digitizer
  • LCD
  • Charge Port Assembly (Buzzer, Charge Port, Mic, Antenna Flex)
  • Battery
  • Home Button Flex Cable (It will work, but they are different and issues arise)

There are various parts that will work for both, but there are tiny variances that can lead to frustrating problems. Look closely, do your research, just because one part looks similar, doesn't mean that it is.  If you ever have any questions, don't hesitate to ask us here at iHoleSale.
